BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF THE A. J. FLETCHER FOUNDATION

John M. Brennan  is the former Chief Financial Officer of Capitol Broadcasting Company. He is a member of both the Broadcast Financial Managers Association and the Financial Executives Institute. Mr. Brennan is a member of the Board of Directors of The Achievement School, a Raleigh secondary school serving students with learning disabilities.

Beth Briggs  is President of Creative Philanthropy, a consulting firm she founded in 1995 to provide planning and grant-making services to individuals, corporations and foundations. She has been actively involved with the nonprofit sector for over 25 years, having served as President of the NC Public Television Foundation; President and Senior Counsel at Capital Consortium; and Director of Development for the 1987 U.S. Olympic Festival. Beth is a native of Charlotte and a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill.

Thomas H. Campbell  has been a member of the Fletcher Foundation's Board of Directors since 1996. He has worked in the broadcasting industry for over thirty years and was formerly President and General Manager of WRAZ-TV. Mr. Campbell is a co-founder of The Family Business Institute and an active supporter of such community organizations as the Salvation Army, United Way and the Rotary Club.

T. Clyde Collins, Jr.  is the retired Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice-President of Southern Life Insurance Company. A resident of Greensboro, NC, he is active in numerous Triad endeavors, including the United Arts Council, Boy Scouts, Hospice and the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro. Keenly interested in healthcare, Mr. Collins is a trustee of the Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital and a past Chairman of North Carolina Baptist Hospitals.

Margaret H. Fletcher  is a graduate of St. Mary's College and a lifelong resident of Raleigh. She is retired from the US Geological Survey Office. For many years, Mrs. Fletcher has been an active member of Hayes Barton Baptist Church and of Raleigh's St. Luke's Circle, which provides affordable housing for elderly ladies. She is the widow of Mr. A. J. Fletcher, founder of Capitol Broadcasting Company and benefactor of the Foundation.

had a distinguished career as a scientist and educator. She was valedictorian of the Peace College Class of 1939 and she held both Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the UNC-Chapel Hill. Dr. Freeman was active in such professional organizations as the National Science Teachers Association, the NC State Textbook Commission and Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Her community involvement included the NC Museum of Natural Science, the Peace College Board of Visitors and the Hayes Barton Baptist Church.

Barbara Goodmon  is President of the board of the A. J. Fletcher Foundation. She is a 1994 graduate of Meredith College and has completed the graduate program at North Carolina State University. She serves on a number of community boards and brings a wealth of experience to the Fletcher Foundation. Mrs. Goodmon's primary interests are in the field of human services, where she has served as Chairman of the Salvation Army, Vice Chairman of The Healing Place and a board member of the Wake County Department of Human Services. She has been recognized for her community work with such honors as The William Booth Award (Salvation Army) and the Academy of Women (YWCA).

James F. Goodmon   is Chariman of the Board of the A. J. Fletcher Foundation and President of the Achievement School. He joined Capitol Broadcasting Company in 1968, and since 1979 has been been its President and CEO. Mr. Goodmon serves on a number of community, corporate and govenmental boards, including the 1999 Special Olympics World Games, the North Carolina Partnership for Children, the UNC Center for Public Television and First Union Bank. He has been recognized for his service to broadcasting and to the community by, among others, the National Broadcasters Association, the Boy Scouts and the UNC School of Journalism.

James F. Goodmon, Jr. is a 1999 graduate of Hampden-Sydney College, where he received the B.A. degree in Managerial Economics and was inducted into Phi Beta Theta, the history honorary society. In 1994 he served as a Page in the United States Senate.

Since 1993, Mr. Goodmon has held various positions with Capitol Broadcasting Company, including operations and sales assignments at WRAL-TV, and management training positions at both WJZY-TV in Charlotte and WRAZ-TV in Durham. He is currently Programming Associate for WRAL-TV/DT in Raleigh. Among his community activities, Mr. Goodmon serves on the Board of Directors of The Achievement School.

Michael D. Hill  is Vice President and General Counsel for Capitol Broadcasting Company. His current responsibilities include the redevelopment of Durham's American Tobacco Warehouse district. Most recently, he has worked on the expansion of the Durham Bulls Athletic Park and the construction of the Diamond View Office Center. Mike is a graduate of Yale University and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Greg Patterson is the President of First Protective – Insurance Designers, a regional insurance and investment brokerage firm. He received an engineering degree from N.C. State University in 1982 and holds professional designations as a Certified Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Consultant and Chartered Life Underwriter. Greg has served as the Board Chair of the Wake County Area Program for Mental Health, Substance Abuse Services and Developmental Disabilities as well as chairing the Wake County Human Services Board. He currently chairs the board of directors for the Healing Place of Wake County.

Maria F. Spaulding is the Director of Wake County Human Services, a position in which she supervises over 1,500 employees who provide a wide range of services for all county residents. Her primary objective is to make the agency client-centered, family-focused, and community-based.

Maria currently serves on the Board of Directors of the United Way of Wake County, Shaw University, and the State Employees Credit Union Advisory Board. In 2000, she was honored with the “Eyes of March Prevent Blindness Honorary Award,” and selected as a “Woman of Note” through the African American Cultural Complex. In 1997 she was recognized with a “Distinguished Alumni” award from Shaw University. Maria previously served as a director of The Healing Place of Wake County, an organization of which she was an original founding member.

Maria is married to Felton Spaulding and they have an 18-year-old daughter, Lee Ann.

Louise S. Stephenson
1921 - 2002
was associated with Capitol Broadcasting Company for over fifty years. She served as the Corporate Secretary for CBC and each of its twelve wholly-owned subsidiaries. For seventeen years, she served as a director of the Tammy Lynn Center, a resident care facility for severely retarded children, and continued to be an active supporter of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society and the North Carolina Symphony. In 1992, Ms. Stephenson was named Business and Professional Woman of the Year of the Wake County Academy of Women.
